The Just-In-Case List Everyone Should Have

Life is unpredictable and bad things happen. If you were to suddenly become incapacitated or hospitalized today, would your loved ones know where to find your important information or know how to handle your affairs?  The solution for preparing for these unpredictable moments is the creation of a Just-In-Case list, also known as a letter of instruction. This list is created by you to help your loved ones navigate your personal records and financial information. This checklist will get you thinking about organizing your information to save your family an enormous amount of time and effort and take out any guessing about your wishes. 

The Just-In-Case List 

  • Social Security number, Medicare number, and location of cards
  • Holder of the mortgage or lease and important phone numbers
  • Other residence information (building manager, helpful neighbor)
  • Names and locations of close family members or friends
  • Names and number of physicians
  • List of medications and dosages
  • Location of Last Will and Testament, Health Care Proxy, etc.
  • Name and number of attorney, accountant, stockbroker
  • Location of safe-deposit box and key
  • Name, number, and location of all insurance policies –health, disability, life, home, automobile
  • Name and number of employee benefits
  • Name and number of bank accounts, bonds, certificate of deposits (CDs),
  • Name and number of stock or bond accounts, mutual funds, IRAs
  • Location of automobile registration and bill of sale or lease agreement
  • Location of birth certificate, marriage license, divorce certificate, tax returns, and outstanding debts
  • List of your internet accounts and passwords
  • List and location of major valuables

Once this information is gathered be sure to store it in a safe place and make a copy for a trusted friend, relative, or attorney.
